When an entity decides to neutralize the greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product, service or event, they often have to tackle some challenges along the way.

In order to obtain a sense of direction we first define a starting point.

In this phase of the process, ClimateSafe staff interacts with the client to evaluate objectives and determine needs. This includes establishing a checklist, identifying available data points, outlining a strategy to develop the carbon footprint, discussions on sourcing offsets, and thinking through the internal and external dimensions of the proposed carbon neutral strategy.

ClimateSafe categorizes emissions by type and quantity using standards developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), International Organization of Standardization (ISO) and other national and international bodies that support the greenhouse gas community.

ClimateSafe will assist our client with forms necessary to collect data used to quantify emissions.

The data is reviewed and analyzed to determine the greenhouse impact of the product, service or event. After the footprint is deemed complete, the results determines the number of offsets required to obtain a greenhouse gas neutral status.

In this phase, the results are compared against several greenhouse gas accounting standards, such as the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-2, to distinguish emissions that would be considered unique to the production process and separate from those that might appear on another entity's balance sheet. This is done in order to discover any potential overlap and to identify the boundaries that satisfy our client's goals for any environmental or legal responsibility.

If a client requires offsets to neutralize their emissions, ClimateSafe can provide advice and help source offsets to facilitate the reduction of the identified emissions.

Alternatively, a client may have generated their own reductions, have identified a source for offsets, or have a plan to mitigate identified emissions. In any case, ClimateSafe staff will work with the client to ensure integrity of the neutralization process. Ultimately, the fundamental criteria for a reductions' legitimacy is that it actually occurred and that it is quantifiable relative to an absolute total.

A description of the product, service or event is recorded in a Certification Report which include the outlined boundaries, the method of calculation, standards utilized in the calculation process, the offsets applied and the time frame of neutralization. The Certification Report is then delivered to the client along with a ClimateSafe Certificate for public review purposes.

After certification approval, the client can use the ClimateSafe logo for marketing, in print, on products, on web sites, and other forms of communication.

Now that ClimateSafe status is attained, the Certification Mark can be used. The mark comes with an Identity Package that has screen ready logos, approved fonts and color charts, as well as suggested phrasing and placement guidelines.

Introducing a ClimateSafe product is a moment that allows the client to communicate a unique attribute. ClimateSafe can work with your marketing team to develop product specific language, and generate print and web ideas. ClimateSafe can also help promote the product's neutralization through its own press releases, support of any client media interviews, and by disseminating the new addition through established contacts in the environmental industry.
